Just outside of Fort Portal in western Uganda, Tooro is home to many incredible people with a very strong sense of community. They chose to build their Hello Hub on the grounds of Tooro High School, which is very central and thus easily accessible to all parts for everyone.
Students and teachers of Tooro High School, as well as community members from the nearby areas, were involved with this build in November 2015. Its location is the least public of all the Hello Hubs sites so far, being within the fenced school grounds. The school, however, is committed to keeping access to the Hello Hub open, and we are working with them to help support this important decision.
There are hundreds of school children on site, and the location of the Hello Hub in Tooro will be an exciting opportunity to fully explore how it can support and add educational resources to an existing school. Students have already used the Hello Hub to sign-up and participate in online learning opportunities being offered by DePaul University in Chicago, USA.
OUR PARTNER IN UGANDA
Partnering with a local education foundation, the Pangea Education Development, we were able to begin our work in Uganda with not just first-hand knowledge, but more importantly with a pre-existing respectful and strong relationship with the community.
Tooro is a unique site for Project Hello World because the Hello Hub is built within an already existing high school. However, since the completion of the build in December 2015, the Hub has become an important tool and meeting point not just for the teachers and students of the school, but to anyone in the community. The data we have gathered during the first weeks shows how the Hub is being used already.
