TOORO

Just outside Fort Portal in western Uganda, Tooro is home to a strong and impressively cooperative community. They chose to build their Hello Hub in the grounds of Tooro High School. The school was founded in 2003. Most of the students are orphans or vulnerable young people, all seeking a better future.

Tooro High is centrally located within the community, and is thus easily accessible. However, the location of the Hello Hub is by far the least public of all of our sites as it lies within the fenced school grounds. All of the other Hubs are freely accessible at all times. In that respect, the Tooro site comes with its own challenges for Hello World. The school, however, is committed to ensuring open access to all members of the community, and our team supports them in this important decision.

There was close cooperation during the building process. Teachers and local leaders sourced building materials, the young and older boys dug and laid the foundation, and the girls focused on building, rendering and painting the seating benches. It was an impressive team effort, led by the amazing children of the community.

Since then, the Hello Hub has become an important resource and meeting point, not just for the teachers and students of the school, but for anyone in the community. Use will further increase when ICT classes, run by Hello World, start in the next couple of weeks. These classes will enable community members to use the Hello Hub to its full potential.

During term times, there are hundreds of high school children on site. The Hello Hub has become an integral part of  daily school life at Tooro High, unequalled anywhere in Uganda. Teachers and students alike use it to acquire and improve their ICT skills, for research, class work, communication and entertainment.

We are currently gathering extensive data on precisely how the Hello Hub is being used, and we will share this information as soon as it becomes available.
